CLIL is a recently word that arrived to the spanish education system.It is not a general word ,that all the educational community teachers,parents and students understand and use in their lifes.
So first of all,I would like to explain the meaning ot that word and then I will describe some details that will help us to clarify what does it mean and how to apply in our new lessons.
CLIL is the acronym of Content Language Integrated Learning.In other words teach subjects using a dual-focussed aims, 1) content, and 2) foreign language’.
To create a possitive and comfortable environment ,let the students to work with small groups or pairs.So they could feel capable of solving activities and doubts .As my experience,it works better because they are learning to share information and help the group.To make sure the activitie is being well applied, make the groups mixing advanced students with kids that are struggle with the content or the language.
Next short paragraph is an attempt to be possitive with students in special with kids that has low self-esteem.Those type of kids are often feel afraid of talking in public like answer questions,suggest ideas,ask for clarifications.To cheer up those kind of students use the following advices:
– try to ask them first weeks questions that are so probably for them to be correct because they will feel that teacher and classmates highly recognizes his learning skills
-In case of feel they are struggle in the questions:
1-ask again using more simple sentences
2-repeat just the main words of the question
3-give him two possible answers.
Another point would be post the general vocabulary in the classroom where students can check every moment they need to use a word.
For example related to school supplies
borrador/eraser lapiz/pencil sacapuntas/sharpener
I used to post in the walls of the classroom specific vocabulary for the units :
sides/lados figures/figuras quadrilateral/cuadrilatero
Another interesting point of the CLIL methodology is that tries to link activities with their real environment .So should be important to apply at least one session of the unit to create a project as a final task
For example for polygons,
final task- Be architects ! to create with play dough a house.House would contain at least two triangles and two quadrilaterals.
My personal advice in order to apply succesfully the foreign language is not correct students,let them to create and produce words,sounds nd sentences.Insted of saying ‘no’ repeat their words but in the correct way.
Nothing more to say, I will need more years to become in a professional expert of teaching spanish and english as foreign languages.
